1. Who should license their dogs?

Article 7 of New York State Agriculture and Markets Law states that all dogs in New York State must be licensed. All dog owners who harbor a dog(s) 4 months or older within the City of Cortland must license their dogs.

3. What should I bring with me?

To get a dog license, bring the following:

- Proof of current rabies vaccination
- Proof of spay/neuter form
- Cash or Check (made payable to City Clerk) to pay for license

4. How much does a dog license cost?

The license fee for an unspayed/unneutered dog is $23 for one year. The license fee for a spayed/neutered dog is $11.00 for one year.

Licenses are renewed each year, and a reminder will be sent out from the Cortland City Clerk's Office.

5. Can I do this by mail?

A dog license can be obtained by providing:

- Proof of current rabies vaccination

- Proof of spay/neuter

- Name of dog

- Breed of dog

- Birth year of dog

7. Why should I license my dog(s)?

The New York State Agriculture and Markets Law Article 7 relates to the licensing, identification and control of dogs and the animal population control program in New York State.

Most importantly, licensing your beloved dog(s) gives you, as the owner, peace of mind if for any reason your dog is ever lost, stolen or injured. Local agencies would be able to identify your pet, contact you and return them back to you and your family.
