April 24, 2019, 12:00 PM @ Cortland County Historical Society
Join speaker Andrea Rankin as she discusses "Rebel Women of the Victorian Era" at Lunch & Learn. The rebel women of the Victorian era rejected the period's gendered expectations in their fights for professional status, racial equality, justice, and sexual freedom. The Victorian ideal of "true womanhood" demanded piety, purity, submissiveness and domesticity--none of which came naturally to our "Rebel Women". We hope you see the historical parallels to our modern-day "nasty woman." In a world that was constantly trying to regulate female behavior, these Victorian women stepped out of that box. Any woman who does that today is still labeled--maybe not a 'rebel woman', but, in many cases, as a 'nasty woman'. Bring your own lunch and we will provide dessert and beverages. This event is free and open to the public. Call 607-756-6071 for more information.
