South Pendleton Street Target of 2009 SRTS Funding

The City was awarded $193,600 in 2009 federal Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) funds to improve/install sidewalks and crosswalks, and calm traffic on the South Pendleton Street hill. SRTS funding is administered by the New York State Department of Transportation which completed the engineering design for the project.

The goal of SRTS funding is to make walking and bicycling to school safer for students in grades K-8. The Pendleton Street hill area is in close proximity to Randall Elementary School and the Cortland Middle School. It is one of two gateways to these schools and is a heavily traveled City street. Children who live in this area are not eligible for school bus transportation. Unfortunately there has been no continuous sidewalk on either the east or west sides of the road to make for a safe walking experience.

The grant funding will remedy this situation by providing a continuous sidewalk from Sunnyfield Drive northward to the intersection of Huntington and South Pendleton Streets. Crosswalks will be improved and permanent mounted speed monitors will be installed. The grant also provides the City Police Department with equipment to better control traffic in the area. Construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2009. The project is being managed by the DPW.
