Crown Neighborhood Award Program Read about the winners of the Crown Neighborhood Award!
There will be eight neighborhoods throughout the City off Cortland that will be chosen for participation in the Crown Neighborhood Award Program. A neighborhood block will be defined as a minimum of 10 properties. Need of the area, scope of the project, as well as a committed neighborhood and its leaders will be the criteria for rewarding neighborhood participation in the program. It is the intent of the program to have one neighborhood in each ward chosen for participation. Upon completion of the work items in each block, a block of the year sign will be installed on the utility or light pole on the end of the block. The neighborhood that is judged to be the most improved by summers end will be rewarded with a neighborhood picnic sponsored by Covanta to be held in September. Contact your neighbors and get your application into Mayor Mary E. Leonard's Office. The City of Cortland through its departments and community development programs working in conjunction with neighborhoods will make available its resources and services to provide assistance to neighborhood stakeholders who desire to improve their neighborhoods. The annual program starts with the distribution of the Neighborhood Proposal Form. Posted here is a list of services and programs provided by the City of Cortland and responsibilities of neighborhood participants. It is a program that can help to stabilize, beautify, and improve blocks or areas in older urban and traditional neighborhoods. It is especially important in areas where high levels of owner occupancy no longer exist, and greater attention needs to be paid to neighborhood stabilization, and neighborhood participation by the residents. Residents are encouraged to continue being active, for example, by watering the trees that are planted as part of the program, weeding tree pits, picking up litter, and reporting problems that the City need to address. This program engages neighborhood residents directly in working with City officials to plan improvements and solve neighborhood problems. Should you have any questions, please contact the Mayor's Office at 25 Court Street, Cortland, New York 13045 or phone at (607) 753-0872. Directions for Proposal Application |
