November 5, Entry Deadline for CYB / ZAP Essay Contest

“What makes Cortland a fun place to grow up?” Essay Contest for young people in grades 3 - 12 who reside with the city of Cortland, or attend Cortland City Schools or St. Mary’s school. The essay must be a maximum of 2,000 words (no minimum) on “What makes Cortland a fun place to grow up?”

Entries will be judged on: Creativity, Writing Style, Grammar/Punctuation, and Incorporation into the essay of specific information on the following: what facilities, activities, events, agencies, or other opportunities are located in Cortland County that are accessible to youth and help make Cortland a fun place to grow up? Essays must have a coversheet which includes: the essay’s title and the author’s name, school, grade, address and phone number. For anonymous judging purposes the author’s personal information (name, address, etc.) should NOT appear anywhere in the essay itself - only on the coversheet.

There will be one first prize and one honorable mention awarded in each of the seven categories: 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade and 9th - 12th grades together. Out of school youth up to age 18 may enter and will be judged in the 9th - 12th grade category.

Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony held at the Cortland Youth Bureau during the first week of December. The deadline for entries is November 5, 2004 and they can be mailed or dropped off to the Cortland Youth Bureau, 35 Port Watson Street, Cortland, NY 13045 or emailed to swilliams@cortland.org.
