Garden Days Are Here!

If you like working outdoors, we've got the job for you! The Youth Center's community garden is planted (in our new location at Beaudry Park!) and we'll need help all summer long with weeding, general upkeep, and finally harvesting.

Kids who help at the garden will earn service credits for their time and effort. Service credits can be used for field trip fees and admission to Saturday Band Nights. Check the calendar for the dates and times of gardening days.

Around the World Movie Nights

The Youth Center will be hosting a movie night every third Monday of each month. The movies shown will highlight different parts of the world and different historical periods. Each movie night will begin at 6:00pm. Free popcorn will be served, and sometimes we'll also prepare dishes from the part of the world featured in the movie.

Youth Spotlight: Syletha Jones

Syletha is the Youth Center's new office aide, as a participant in the Cortland Works Career Center's summer-employment program. She will be a senior at Cortland High School this fall. Her favorite subject is math. She is also a cheerleader for the Purple Tigers. She has not picked a college yet, but she definitely wants to move out of New York State. During the summer, Syletha enjoys hanging out with her friends, shopping, and swimming. We are thrilled to have her as our new Youth Center staff member!

Summer Field Trips!

Registrations are now being accepted for all of our remaining summertime field trips. They're open to kids age 13-18 or in 7th - 12th grades (including those who graduated this year and those who just finished 6th grade). Sign up at the Youth Center or the CYB Main Office next door. Here's the lineup:

August 6: Adirondack Museum and Wild Center Museum/Zoo*
August 13: Fair Haven State Park on Lake Ontario
August 20: Zip-Lining at Spring Mountain, Pennsylvania
August 27: Enchanted Forest Water Safari (postponed from July 9)

*The trip to the Adirondack museums is a family trip. Teens may still sign up on their own, but the trip is also open to their parents and grandparents. Younger children may also be registered if accompanied on the trip by a parent or grandparent. Limit two adults per family.

Registration forms are available at the Center, as well as a handy pamphlet describing each trip and listing the cost, departure times, etc.

New and Improved Youth Center!

The Center is expanding its lower age requirement. Our traditional age range has been 13 to 18 (or 7th through 12th grade), but now we are also open to kids 11 and 12 (or in at least 5th grade) from 3 to 6 pm every weekday. Teens are still welcome during these hours, too, of course. From 6 pm until closing, the Center will be for teens only.

Agency Spotlight: Cooperative Extension

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County has been serving our community since 1913. They aim to help community members improve their lives by providing research information and knowledge to the public through Cornell's Research Department. They offer a plethora of services ranging from parenting advocacy to nutritional cooking classes. They are also the 4-H headquarters for Cortland County. The 4-H Youth Development Program has over six million participants nation-wide. They offer experiences and activities to the youth that promote independence, belonging, generosity and mastery. If you are interested in the 4-H program, or any of the other services offered by the Cornell Cooperative Extension, you can contact the main office at (607)753-5077.

Tie Dye Day!

Grab a T-shirt and bring it to the Center on Tuesday, August 10th for our first-ever Tie Dye Day. All supplies will be provided.
